Gov't Imports Over 222,000 Metric Tons of Wheat for Drought Victims

Addis Ababa December 9/2015 More than 222,000
metric tons of wheat bought by the government for
victims of drought has arrived.
The Federal Strategic Food Security Reserve
Agency is storing the wheat at seven sites.
One of sites at Kombolcha, South Wollo Zone, has
reportedly been storing up to 60,000 metric tons of
wheat at its 12 warehouses, it was learned.
Kombolcha site Manager, Addisu Mamo said wheat is
being distributed to drought affected areas of the
country based on their needs.
The relief food from the site had been distributed to drought affected areas in Amhara, Tigray and Afar
states, he added.
Since there is sufficient food at the site now it is ready to distributed wheat to those who need it, according to
Representative of the Agency Public Relations Coordinator Director, Gizaw Abute said on his part the agency
is purchasing wheat from Ukraine and Russia for drought victims.
Up to now the agency has bought 222,639 metric tons of wheat at Adama, Shashemene, Wolayita Soddo,
Shinile, Kombolcha, Mekele and Woreta in 65 warehouses.
In order to increase its storing capacity, the agency plans to open six sites at surplus producing areas and
drought affected areas.
This would increase the current storing capacity of the agency by threefold to 1.5 million metric tons.
